I was born and raised in Northumberland County, and I've returned to my roots in the place I call home. My earliest and most cherished memories transport me to my Aunt Val’s garden and her property in Gores Landing. I vividly recall the enchanting atmosphere and the magic of her garden. It features distinct garden rooms and offers a deep connection to nature, complete with animal friends and wildlife visiting. This garden has been lovingly cultivated over time and continues to grow. It includes bentwood willow arbors and fences, dry stone walls, native perennials swaying gently, a kitchen garden, and extensive vegetable patches.
The atmospheric quality and core memory immersion significantly influence my gardening practice today. My journey of learning continues, as I see myself as a lifelong student of this craft. I began by earning a BA in Art History from the University of Toronto, followed by fulfilling my passion for the environment with a diploma in Urban Arboriculture from Humber College. I spent some time working in Urban Forestry while also honing my artistic skills in ballet, aerial dance, textile art, jewelry making, drawing, and painting whenever I could.
Primarily self-taught and feeling disillusioned with academia, yet eager to enhance my skills as an owner of a bespoke landscape brand, I enrolled in Landscape Design for Climate Resilience courses at Toronto Metropolitan University. I had the opportunity to work with Ben O’Brien of Wild By Design in Prince Edward County, where I developed a passion for natural planting design and landscapes. This foundational experience has significantly influenced my work, blending landscape design with artistry, much like creating a painting.
I deeply admire the women in this field, as our presence remains relatively uncommon. These talented female landscape designers and garden creators produce remarkable work that stirs emotions, showcases beauty, and promotes sustainability. The insights and philosophies of Vita Sackville-West, Beth Chatto, along with contemporary designers Jinny Blom and Sarah Price, serve as my primary sources of inspiration and knowledge.
Over the past five years, I have been involved in managing, curating, and designing both small urban gardens and large rural landscapes. My studio is nestled in the picturesque rolling hills of Northumberland County. I share my home with my partner and our three senior dogs, situated at the edge of the woods, and I take every opportunity to weave a willow basket and connect with my ancestors.
